PASL regular season. Ron Newman Cup. U.S. Open. The Chicago Mustangs have won every team trophy in the 2013-14 Professional Arena Soccer League season. A tightly-played opening half eventually opened up and the Mustangs defeated Hidalgo La Fiera 14-5 Sunday before a crowd of 3,969 at the Sears Centre Arena.
Bryan Moya opened scoring just :29 into the game and that set the tone for what was to come. Wilo Martinez, who was shut out in the semifinal against Cleveland, scored at 2:24 and Miguel Vaca closed the opening frame to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
A pair of goals by La Fiera had Hidalgo back in the game midway through the second quarter, but the final 3+ minutes were taken over by the Mustangs. Vaca assisted on goals scored by Martinez and Adrian Ortiz, which made the score 5-2 at the halftime break.
Luis Ortega scored what would be the game-winner at 1:17 of the third quarter when he caught La Fiera goalie Juan Gamboa off his line to score from over midfield. Chicago was on its way to nine-goal half as David Aranda, Moya and Vaca added to the total before Hidalgo could slow the bleeding at 10:04 of the quarter. Chicago led 10-4 at the third intermission.
Four-straight goals in the fourth (Ortiz, Vaca, Ortega and Martinez) made it 14-4 with 6:55 remaining. La Fiera scored once more, but it was too little as Chicago celebrated their Ron Newman Cup and U.S. Open victory.
Making several big saves, Jesus Flores earned the victory in net for Chicago. Flores finished with 13 saves and completed the season playing every minute of all 18 league games.
